The century-old Monte Carlo Masters, precisely 128 years old, is the first of three ATP Masters 1000 tournaments played on clay. The top eight seeds have advanced to the second round after receiving first-round byes.
Rafael Nadal holds the record for the most titles won at the Monte Carlo Country Club, with 11 titles on the turf. His streak of eight titles between 2005 and 2012 is an Open Era record. Nadal has announced another withdrawal this season as he grapples with his fitness, having skipped the Sunshine Double before arriving in Monaco.
In Nadal’s absence, Novak Djokovic holds the fort for the Big 3 and is one of the few from the old guard still active. Djokovic has had limited success in Monaco, failing to advance past the third round since 2019. The Serb’s last three losses came at the hands of players who have never entered the top 10: Dan Evans, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Lorenzo Musetti.
Djokovic has yet to win a title in 2024, having lost the Australian Open for the first time since 2018, made an early exit at Indian Wells, and skipped the Miami Open. He will be well aware that in the last 33 years, the World No. 1 has only taken home the Monte-Carlo trophy five times (Nadal three times and Djokovic twice).
The top-seeded Serbian and No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz could potentially meet in the semifinal round, resuming their rivalry with Djokovic leading 3-2. Alcaraz is also seeking success at Monte-Carlo and has been off-colour this year, with only a win at Indian Wells. In contrast, at this time in 2023, the Spaniard had reached three finals (Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Indian Wells) and won two of them (Buenos Aires, Indian Wells).
Djokovic, a two-time champion in Monte Carlo, will start against either Roman Safiullin or a qualifier. Lorenzo Musetti and Alex de Minaur are potential third-round opponents. If Djokovic reaches the final, he may face either Jannik Sinner or Zverev, part of a challenging draw for the Serbian.
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz, playing at Monte-Carlo for the second time since a second-round loss in 2022, opens against either Felix Auger-Aliassime or a qualifier. If the seedings hold, he could face Ugo Humbert in the third round and Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals.
Musetti will face American Taylor Fritz in the first round, with the winner playing one of two Frenchmen: Arthur Fils or Adrian Mannarino.
Defending champion Andrey Rublev will take on either Australian Alexei Popyrin or a qualifier in his second-round match and could encounter another Australian, Alex de Minaur. De Minaur will face 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka for a chance to progress.
Newly crowned ATP World No. 2, Jannik Sinner, leads the bottom half of the draw and aims to capture his fourth title this season. If the Italian triumphs, he will be the first man since Djokovic in 2015 to win trophies at the Australian Open, Miami, and Monte-Carlo Masters in the same calendar year.
Sinner’s campaign begins against either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Sebastian Korda. Alexander Bublik could be a third-round opponent, followed by a potential quarterfinal clash with the in-form Grigor Dimitrov. A semifinal rematch with Daniil Medvedev is possible for Sinner.
Holger Rune, last year’s finalist, will face either Italian Matteo Arnaldi or Finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori in his second-round match. In the second round, Daniil Medvedev will play against either French wildcard Gael Monfils or Jordan Thompson. Zverev will face one of two unseeded players in the second round, Daniel Evans or Sebastian Ofner.
