Singer sues hospital, says staff thought he was mentally ill and wasn't member of Four Tops

  • AP

The lead singer of the Four Tops says a Detroit-area hospital restrained him and ordered a psychological exam after refusing to believe that he was part of the Motown music group. Alexander Morris filed a lawsuit Monday against Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren. He is claiming racial discrimination and other misconduct during a 2023 visit for chest pain and breathing problems. Morris says staff assumed he was mentally ill when he revealed his celebrity status. Morris is not an original member of the Four Tops, but he joined the group in 2019. The hospital won't comment on the allegations but says it doesn't condone discrimination.

New research explores how a short trip to space affects the human body

  • By ADITHI RAMAKRISHNAN - AP Science Writer

New research shows space tourists experience some of the same body changes as astronauts who spend months in orbit. NASA and other organizations have long studied the toll of space travel on astronauts, but there's been less attention on space tourists. A chartered flight in 2021 by four people allowed researchers to examine how quickly the body adapts to spaceflight. The space tourists on the SpaceX mission saw wide-ranging cellular shifts that mostly stabilized once they returned to Earth. The findings were published Tuesday along with other studies on the health of astronauts.

Looking for a good summer read? “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” is a “wholly original novel,” writes Associated Press reviewer Rob Merrill. More than half a century later, experts found wreckage of jet that disappeared with 5 men in Vermont

  • By LISA RATHKE - Associated Press

Fifty-three years after a private plane carrying five men disappeared on a snowy Vermont night, experts believe they have found the wreckage of the long lost jet in Lake Champlain. The corporate jet disappeared shortly after departing the Burlington airport for Providence, Rhode Island, on Jan. 27, 1971. Those aboard included two crew members and three employees of Georgia development company. At least 17 searches have failed to find the plane until underwater searcher Garry Kozak and a team last month found wreckage of a jet with the same custom paint scheme close to where the plane disappeared. While relatives are grateful and relieved that the plane has been found, the discovery also opens up more questions and old wounds.

Netanyahu's top rival left Israel's war Cabinet. How does that affect the prime minister and Gaza?

  • By JULIA FRANKEL and JACK JEFFERY - Associated Press

The resignation of a senior member of Israel’s war Cabinet was a dramatic show of distrust in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his strategy for the eight-month-old war with Hamas. But the Sunday departure of the centrist Benny Gantz does not immediately appear to threaten Netanyahu, who still controls a majority coalition in parliament. For now, the Israeli leader becomes more heavily reliant on far-right allies who oppose the latest U.S.-backed cease-fire proposal and want to press ahead with the war. Gantz’s departure from the war Cabinet returns him to his pre-war role of opposition leader in Israel’s parliament.

NYC bird group drops name of illustrator and slave owner Audubon

  • By KAREN MATTHEWS - Associated Press

The conservationist group known as NYC Audubon has changed its name to NYC Bird Alliance to distance itself from the pro-slavery views of ornithologist and illustrator John James Audubon. The name change follows similar moves by Audubon Society chapters in Chicago, Seattle and other cities. The newly named NYC Bird Alliance formed in 1979 and calls itself an independent chapter affiliated with the National Audubon Society. The national group's board voted last year to keep the Audubon name despite the fact that Audubon was a slave owner and an opponent of abolitionism.

  • By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS - AP Business Writer

United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain is under investigation by a court-appointed watchdog who has been working to stamp out corruption at the union in wake of its stunning bribery and embezzlement scandal several years ago. The monitor, Neil Barofsky, disclosed that he was investigating Fain — as well as other senior UAW officials including secretary-treasurer Margaret Mock — in his ninth report to Judge David M. Lawson on Monday. Barofsky also accused the union of a “recent lapse” in cooperation with his monitor duties, which he says began to erode earlier this year after his investigations into these individuals began.

Some California officials can meet remotely. For local advisory boards, state lawmakers say no

  • By SAMEEA KAMAL/CalMatters - CalMatters

A bill to allow local advisory boards to keep COVID remote meeting rules has failed in the Legislature. The debate centered over making it easier for board members to participate or giving Californians the chance to address public officials face to face. Supporters included Disability Rights California and groups representing local governments. They said the state has a responsibility to allow more people to participate on boards and commissions. But press and government transparency advocates saw the bill’s failure as a “critical victory for open government.” First Amendment Coalition advocacy director Ginny LaRoe said videoconferencing is already available under a variety of circ*mstances and shouldn't be the only option to keep tabs on government.

Animal rights activists pasted a cartoon image over a portrait of King Charles III on Tuesday at a London art gallery, the latest in a series of incidents at U.K. museums as campaigners use vandalism to publicize their causes. A group called Animal Rising shared a video of campaigners pasting a picture of a character called Wallace, from the “Wallace and Gromit” comedy series, over the king’s head. Animal Rising said it wanted to highlight an investigation into animal husbandry rules at farms approved by an animal welfare charity. The portrait, which is on display at a gallery in London, is behind a plastic screen and is undamaged.

Riots erupt in drought-stricken central Algeria over months of water shortages

  • Associated Press

Violent riots erupted in a drought-stricken Algerian desert city last weekend after months of water shortages left taps running dry and forced residents to queue to access water for their households. Protestors in Tiaret wearing balaclavas set tires aflame and set up make-shift barricades to block roads in protest of their water being rationed, according to pictures and videos circulating on social media. The rioting comes as Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune prepares to vie for a second term as president of the oil-rich North African nation. The region has been among the most hit by climate change and a multi-year drought.

China keeps its 2026 World Cup dream alive despite 1-0 loss to South Korea

China kept its 2026 World Cup dream alive by the narrowest of margins despite a 1-0 loss to South Korea. China advanced to the next qualification round because Thailand, needing to beat Singapore by three goals, only won 3-1. South Korea finished the second round of Asian qualification unbeaten atop Group C and remains on course for an 11th straight World Cup appearance. China needed a draw to ensure second place in the group but was forced to wait and hope that Singapore could avoid a three-goal loss at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok. Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History says the flags were generated by some sort of technology, and had never really hung there. But they're hopping mad that the historical site had been used in the ad campaign, and say they would take legal action.

Dozens arrested in new pro-Palestinian protests at University of California, Los Angeles

  • By JOHN ANTCZAK - Associated Press

Police have thwarted attempts by pro-Palestinian demonstrators to set up a new encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles. Previous camps at UCLA were cleared after an attack by counterprotesters this spring. UCLA police say approximately 25 people were arrested late Monday for willful disruption of university operations, and one for interfering with a police officer. Police say they repeatedly tried to set up tents, canopies and barriers in various locations, disrupting final exams and causing damage. Similar demonstrations on campuses across the U.S. and in Europe have called for an end to support for Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza.
